The Brief

After a year living in Puglia, I became increasingly aware of the regionโ€™s extraordinary cultural and gastronomic identity, but also of a noticeable gap in well-designed, contemporary merchandising. Despite its strong visual heritage and international appeal, much of the existing souvenir production feels disconnected from modern branding and marketing strategies.

This project was born from that observation. I developed a small collection of postcards and enamel pins that reinterpret local icons โ€” such as the pasticciotto, orecchiette and taralli โ€” through a clean, playful and contemporary graphic language. The aim is to translate tradition into desirable, design-led objects that speak both to locals and to a new generation of visitors.

The project envisions a hypothetical collaboration with Visit Puglia as a way to rethink regional promotion through cohesive visual identity, strategic merchandising and culturally relevant storytelling.

The Process

I began by researching Pugliaโ€™s visual culture, identifying local symbols, food and traditions that could be translated into a contemporary visual language. I then explored different illustration styles and developed a cohesive graphic direction for the collection, focusing on recognisable elements such as pasticciotto, orecchiette and taralli.

Once the illustrations were finalised, I adapted the designs across different merchandise formats, considering the specific requirements of each product. The artwork was prepared for both postcards and enamel pins, simplifying shapes and details where necessary to ensure the designs remained clear and effective at a small scale.

The final collection combines playful illustration with a consistent visual identity, turning familiar elements of Puglian culture into contemporary, collectible souvenirs.

  • The project has evolved beyond a personal portfolio concept, with the collection now being introduced to real businesses and tourism-focused spaces across Puglia.

  • The postcards are set to be distributed from June 2027 at a tourist accommodation complex in Specchiolla, Puglia, providing the first real-world application of the collection.

  • The project is currently being developed with the aim of adding more places to the collection (Ostuni and Otranto being the next priority) and establishing partnerships with local businesses, turning the collection into a commercially viable regional merchandising concept.

  • By combining illustration, product design and local cultural references, the project explores how contemporary merchandising can contribute to the promotion of Puglia while creating products that visitors can genuinely connect with and take home.
